More Than a Match: KY Rush and Georgetown FC Team Up for Tornado Relief
Soccer brings hope and help to storm-impacted families in Pulaski and Laurel Counties

Yesterday, the KY Rush U15 Girls hosted Georgetown FC’s GFC 2010 Girls Black team in a special matchup that went far beyond the field of play. Before kickoff, GFC players delivered a generous donation of storm relief supplies—gift cards and cleaning materials—to support families in Somerset, London, and surrounding areas impacted by the devastating tornadoes that struck just weeks ago.
On the evening of May 16, a powerful EF-4 tornado tore through southern Kentucky, cutting a nearly 60-mile path across Russell, Pulaski, and Laurel counties. With peak winds reaching 170 mph, the tornado left behind staggering destruction—damaging over 1,500 homes in Laurel County alone. Tragically, 19 lives were lost across the region, and many more families were displaced or left to rebuild from the ground up.
Communities in Somerset and London were among the hardest hit. Cleanup and recovery efforts are ongoing, and donations of essential supplies continue to play a critical role in helping residents take the next steps forward.
A Match with Meaning
The pre-game donation from GFC was a simple but powerful act of compassion—proof that soccer is about much more than competition.
Coach Adi Ambrosie (KY Rush) shared his gratitude:
“On behalf of our team, I want to express our heartfelt support for the tornado victims in the Somerset and London, KY area. It’s a blessing to stand together in times of need. We’re grateful to partner with GFC in bringing hope and practical help to those affected.”
Coach Nick Maxwell (Georgetown FC) echoed the spirit of unity:
“The soccer community is just that, a community. Regardless of where we are located or the battles that happen on the pitch, it is about the bigger picture and I’m so happy we could help.”
The gesture was a reminder that youth sports can be a platform for leadership, service, and connection. Whether it’s collecting donations, raising awareness, or simply showing support—teams can have a lasting impact beyond the game itself.
Final Whistle
The storm may have passed, but the rebuilding has only just begun. The partnership between KY Rush and Georgetown FC is a beautiful example of how the soccer community can step up, show heart, and bring real help to those who need it most. We’re proud of our players, coaches, and visiting guests for using this moment to make a difference—together.
